I have just returned from three days on the Costa del Brighton, where it was my pleasure to be the guest of Calvary Evangelical church(a church by the way which although it is small is really getting to grips with evangelism in the UK today - very impressive) and to work with christians from different denominations, including some great people from New Frontiers. Five meetings in two and a half days were draining but these were in a different league from most that I have done. It was astonishing that the event in the Jubilee library was packed out, with the majority being non-Christians. The questioning was fierce and for me the sense of the Lords presence palpable. It really was spiritual warfare - and the devil lost! Afterwards some of us went to the pub with some of the atheists (in Brighton they call themselves the 'Brights'!) and continued the conversation. It was wonderful that several came along to the church the following night where we continued. This was way beyond debate or even just exploring - there was real interest. I was greatly drawn to people like Ash, Guy, Paul and others. Thanks guys....you are wonderful people but you are still in desperate need of Jesus. When you come to know him, as I pray you will, then you will see how wonderfully liberating the Gospel is. There was one man last night who caused great amusement by suggesting that I was a disgrace because I was Scottish! 'Listen mate," he declared, "I'm English and I believe in God 100% - a whole lot more than you do. You can't, you're Scottish - I've been in Scotland and they are killing each other up there". The notion that if you are Scottish you can't be Christian was I admit a new one on me! However, despite the joy of watching Andy Murray win over the English crowds, there is a sense in which I feel a level of shame and pain over being Scottish - and that is the state of the Church in Scotland. In this months Monthly Record I tried to pour out my heart and share my concerns. This article has had more response already, than almost anything I have ever written. Read it below and feel free to add your own comments.

Atheists and secularists often complain about religion on the BBC – little realising that most of what is produced is actually a very good argument for atheism. Generally tailored for the over 50’s in the South east of England much of the religious output is controlled by theological liberals whose message is so boring because it rarely moves beyond ‘God is nice and wants you to be nice too’. It is boring, dead, meaningless, wet, spineless, PC, trivia. The Gospel is way too radical for the BBC.

It has been a long weekend….indeed a long week. I decided to reenter the Dawkins website, after reading an article and many comments on the debate between my friend Professor John Lennox of the University of Oxford and Professor Richard Dawkins – who apparently does not want to be my friend (I can’t understand why!). It was an interesting experience (leading once more to my being ‘trolled’/banned) and resulted in a week of debate which cumulated this weekend in taking part in a debate on morality on Premier Radio (see ‘unbelievable’ on www.premier.org.uk) and a debate in London with the British Humanist Society philosopher, Peter Cave. Overall the various experiences have left me exhausted, drained and astounded at the intolerance, arrogance and emptiness of secular humanism, and the fullness, depth and breadth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Why?
